College Football – Best Team of the Decade?

We had an interesting conversation this morning among our team regarding the best college football team over the last 8 years (since 2000). My immediate answer was Oklahoma, but I am obviously biased. In any case, it was an enlightening discussion with some pretty heated debate. We felt like it was a tie between Oklahoma and USC, with a close runner up being Ohio State. Thanks to our resident college football expert Steven Donnelly for a quick run down on the appropriate stats to help us come up with our final answers!

So the second question was why? Why have these teams been so consistently better than other teams in college football over the last 8 years? Here are some of the reasons:

1. Great Head Coach

2. Immediate re-emergence or continuation of a solid tradition; respected program

3. Strength and physical training- worked in the off season to get in shape

4. Know how to win; a desire to compete

5. right players to fit the system (developing players)

6. recruiting the best talent (finding players)

This kind of list has immediate practical application to our worlds of work and ministry, and why some teams succeed and others don’t. Also, it was the combination of a great offense and a great defense. This is obvious I know, but think about the teams that are midlevel college programs- Oklahoma State, Vanderbilt, Texas Tech, Michigan State. These teams are usually lopsided towards either offense or defense, and typically have 4 out of the above 6 outlined.

Do you agree with Oklahoma, USC and Ohio State being the top three teams of the decade so far?

What other qualities are key to great teams?

So, I’m going to throw a curve ball into the contest… I think that the BUFFS are the Dynamic Dynasty of the past 10 years…! Lets review the stats…

In 2000, they had a great season start to the new millennium by coming out with a record of 3-8…

In 2002 they lost to oklahoma 11-27, but hey it was a great game!

In 2004 they had another good game with Oklahoma but stil lost 3-42…

In 2006 they only had 26 fumbles… but didn’t loose to Oklahoma (Disclaimer – they didn’t play oklahoma)

And in 2007… They finally slayed the dragon in defeating Oklahoma 27-24! but it was the first time in over 10 years…

And Thats why I say the BUFFS are the best team of the decade!

did you really insert vanderbilt in a conversation about the best football teams of the decade?

if vandy gets in, then you have to insert the university of south carolina fighting gamecocks…

great teams must revel in almost wins and come from ahead losses…it’s just a must.

great teams must perfect the usage, countenance, and timing of the phrase, “wait until next year…”

great teams must constantly pursue hall of fame, wildly successful coaches and herald them the savior of the program and make shirts that say, “got lou?” or “got spurrier?” only see those coaches do the same kind of damage to their career that michael jordan did to his in a wizards uniform…

these are three subtle qualities that must be added to the conversation. and when you add those three qualities, you have to land on the gamecocks as the greatest of the decade…

i really do love and believe in my team…but sometimes, you just have to laugh a little…:-)

oh, we spanked the other usc in ‘83 (38-14) and they quit playing us…so, we’re 1-0 all-time versus the trojans.

Ummmm, seriously Brad, are you discussing college football without mentioning the “U”? Not cool. Ohio St. can’t even enter the conversation – they play in some joke conference, and their only national title came on a disputed call against my Canes, a call that SI itself called a joke.

Not that I’m bitter or anything!

I completely agree wtih Skeletor, the Buffs are a Dynamic Dynasty and worthy of consideration in this discussion. Thanks friend,

Ok, a real objective opinion in this discussion. I don’t know if we can put the University of Spoiled Children in there because of all these allegations about Reggie Bush. If these things turn out to be true, they are going to be stripped of their NC and Reggie Bush will be stripped of his Heisman. Way to go Reggie.

OU can’t be it because they lost in the most famous football game since the band is on the field.

Who is my pick you ask? I am picking my mighty Noles of FSU. Our streak in the 80’s & 90’s was so impressive that it bleeds into the 2000’s. Our legacy will hang over the heads of any team that tries to call itself the team of the decade. Our record, 14 years finishing in the Top 4, (that will never happen again by anyone) played in 5 National Championships, won 2 NC’s, won 2 Heisman’s and went on the road to beat about every major college program in the country. BAM! Go Noles!

Oh yeah, and Ohio State? They are the new Atlanta Braves of college football. They back into the National Championship and then get spanked. They play in maybe the worst conference in the last few years and they are straight up raggedy. Raggedy I say. Raggedy.

As an OU alumni I have to pull for them… otherwise it would cause a rip in the space time continuum and I’d vaporize on the spot! They’re definitely on the list… in the decade so far they have one national championship and they’ve played in two other title games. They have five Big 12 titles in 8 years. In that same 8 years they finished in the top ten all but two years. Since 2000 they have produced one Heisman winner and another runner up (Mr. Peterson) who is going to be a beast in the NFL for years to come if he can stay healthy. The number of players going on to the NFL has increased exponentially in the Stoopes era. Most importantly, as someone who attended OU in the Switzer era, Stoopes has done more to clean up the reputation of a school with a great history that had been severely tarnished than any other coach on the list… even when doing so impacted the team’s chances of winning. Yes, I wish they would fix their tendency to blow through the regular season and then choke in the big game, but hey, I guess you can’t always have everything! Boomer Sooner!

Okay, good banter so far.

Ross- nice try on the Noles. You and Travis are in the running (with his vote for Miami) for the most likely to not let go of the previous decade award!

Now I am a huge Bobby Bowden fan, but it was great to watch my Sooners beat the Noles at the turn of the century in 2000. And Travis- I watched Oklahoma beat up on the Canes in Norman this past year. It was nice to finally beat you all.

As for Jay Hardwick and his love of South Carolina. I am sorry man. They would fit into the same category in my opinion as Vanderbilt- maybe a level above the Commodores, but not much.

But regardless, the Gamecock fans are tried and true and loyal as you’ll find.

Steve- you are speaking my language man!

OU all the way! 7 National Championships, and except for a few hiccups in the 90s the Sooners are easily the dominant team of all time.

Okay, so we’re just talking the last decade. I’d have to put OU & USC up there with (and I hate to say it) USC creeping ahead because they actually one the big one more than us. I know “Always the bridesmaid…” Don’t worry, we’ll get the title again soon and break our current jinx.

First, let me say it is an honor to see another Sports Topic (I think it should be something that happens on a regular basis).

I think we have failed to mention LSU (2 national titles in the last decade). They also have had several double digit win seasons in the SEC. I still would give the edge to USC (2 national titles and almost 3, multiple Heisman winners). However, it is not hard to stay ranked at the top in a weak conference. Of course UVA will be the team to watch in 2010.

I would like to see the next topic as best 2 or 3 – sport (football, basketball, and baseball if needed) College/University of the last decade.

ok – I see my wife “socalgirl” hasn’t responded to this yet… As hard a time as I give her because I’m sick of hearing about USC and watching the banner come out at the house, I will have to agree with her and Chris – they actually WON championships this decade as opposed to OSU. If every team in the country scheduled like OSU, we’d have a real mess in the BCS because the top 20 would all be undefeated. Sorry Brad, the Sooners are a consistently good team, but I don’t think they fit in here…
So USC has my vote… and i can’t get out of this without at least mentioning my Hokies… hey, they’ve been every bit as strong as Miami or FSU this decade!

“Every bit as strong as FSU in this decade”, that’s the funniest thing I’ve heard today.

Are you crazy? We said USC was the dominant team… how did OU sneak back in??? Bias! Bias! Bias!

I am surprised no one has brought up Georgia. Maybe we should consider them a distant fourth.

However, I can see where LSU could get some votes- two national championships the last four years. The problem is the years 2000-2003. They were top ten but not top five.

I think D-Train is on to something. Seriously… Its always a deeper issue, right? I think key #7 should be a mediocre conference. Let’s be honest — its pretty obvious that the SEC is, hands down, the best conference in the country.

This is why a LSU or Georgia doesn’t get put up there with teams like USC or OU. Take the past couple of seasons — everybody in the SEC beats everybody else in the SEC because the conference is FULL of strong teams! Move any of these top SEC teams to a lesser conference and they automatically look much better.

OU all the way. Ohio has no conference and plus the STINK! USC is just a flat out cheater and ever since there heisman QB left there not so great. Even though I dislike this team I think LSU is tied with OU in the lead they both are doing good. But still Boomer Sooner baby Yoooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

LSU owns wins in BCS title games over both OU & OSU. 4 SEC Championship game apperances with 3 SEC titles. 4-0 in BCS bowl games. 2 National Championships. Also handed Miami their worst ever bowl defeat 40-3. Only other school that can measure up is SC. OSU & OU are a tier below.

To BC:

Playing Texas twice, USC twice, UCLA, and Washington this decade isn’t weak out of conference opponents.

Also in bowls

Beat Kansas State (Fiesta)
Beat Miami (Fiesta)
Beat Oklahoma State (Alamo)
Beat Notre Dame (Fiesta)

Anyway I would say USC or LSU for best team of the decade, with OU and OSU just below.

Also, for what it is worth, there are 8 Div-1A (Bowl) schools in the state of Ohio.
