Where Have all the Interns Gone

A recent article I wrote that first appeared in REV Magazine.

Where Have All the Interns Gone?

You can’t be president until you are 35. You can’t run a company until you are 40. You can’t be a Senior Pastor of a large church until you are at least 45…. You may have talent, but you have to wait your turn…. You have to earn the right to lead. Agree or disagree?…..

Great article. I REALLY appreciate your take/posture on the dearth of interns.

Question: is it possible that they are interning somewhere else? Is it possible they aren’t entrepreneur-like, that instead they don’t think the circles we run in have anything to offer so they are going somewhere else like:
– Christian business leaders/owners
– Spiritual directors
– overseas
– 3-month to 2-year monastic scenarios

I know for me, I go through seasons of thinking I’m seeing the U.S. clearly and then not seeing past my desk clearly. I’m in the later right now, so I’m coming at this from a “perhaps we don’t think we are seeing as much as we think we are” perspective. Plus, I’ve come across (anecdotally, no actual research here) quite a few who are ‘interning’ in the above ways — much more in the last few years.
