New New Philanthropy

Leadership is Influence. That’s what Maxwell says. And I believe that to be true.
And influence can show up in a variety of ways. Influencing a team, a friend, a family, and sometimes a network.
In the past, when it came to influencing through giving, most of us kept that part of our lives to ourselves. Giving, and being charitable, was a private matter. But times have changed.
Today, a new style of giving and being charitable has emerged. Philanthropy has changed. A new form of influence for good through bloggers and twitterers, and the amazing social networks that have been created.
- Seth Godin just challenged his blog community last week to provide a small donation in exchange for receiving his new book a few weeks before it releases next year, and quickly raised over $100,000 in 48 hours for the Acumen Fund.
- Jon Acuff just raised $60,000 to build two kindergarden schools in Vietnam through challenging his blog readers to give.
- Alyssa Milano just raised $25,000 for clean water in 5 new communities through charity: water and the Mycharity project in conjunction with her 37th birthday. And Jack Dorsey, the founder of Twitter, just recently raised $15,000 through Mycharity as well.
- The Causes function on Facebook is constantly being used to create giving opportunities for Facebook friend groups.
Philanthropy has changed. Changed for good. And for those of us who have social networks, let’s consider how we are using our influence as well.

I love seeing how these networks are being leveraged for good. When we do it publicly I think it challenges others to step up and get in the game at a whole new level. I know for me when I see what Seth did, what Jon and others like Jeff S. with Plywood, it pushes me to dream bigger and want to do more to create networks of good.

http://www.6000feetaway.com !!! We don’t have quite the following of Seth Godin but still are trying to raise a few bucks before the end of the year for a basketball court at a brand new ministry center in Montgomery. All we need is $3

Brad– this is something you do extremely well. You help point the light toward the need and call on leaders to respond. Through Catalyst I’ve been been exposed and personally met incredible leaders like Gary Haugen. Last month, I cried as I shook Gary’s hand… this man that witnessed the darkness of the Rwanda genocide and is now actively trying to end modern day slave trafficking (http://ijm.org). Just today I heard of a group of college kids who are helping save a baby in Iraq that is 1 of 4000 in line for a heart surgery (http://preemptivelove.org). Just 3 years ago, I was a self-focused computer guys. Now, I get to meet hero’s. Keep stirring others towards love and good deeds. I can’t say thank you clearly enough.
